The Walled City of Kowloon Booklet

Project Description: This is a collaboration project that was made amongst the photography, writing and drawing students studying abroad in Hong Kong. The idea was to create a booklet combining all three medias and developing a set of different stories that gives an insight and interprets this unique city.

Target Audience: Students and tourists

Inside the Kowloon Walled City where 50,000 residents eked out a grimy living in the most densely populated place on earth. By the early 1980s it was notorious for brothels, casinos, cocaine parlours and opium dens. Despite it being a hotbed of crime many of its inhabitants went about their lives in relative peace with children playing on the rooftops and those living in the upper levels seeking refuge high above the city. With so much history, we decided to use the story of someone who lived inside to portray their lives living in such a place.

Design Goals and Objectives: To create a booklet design that combines different medias to create a story about the Kowloon City. There are three stories, and each one is interpreted from a different point of view. The objective of my group was to include the emotional and insight knowledge of someone who had experienced living in the walled city of Kowloon in a serene and gratifying manner.
